WHAT IS IT?

The Bouncy Bike Challenge is a 2-day bike challenge which covers around 85 miles over 2 days with the route always located in Scotland. The ‘BBC’ as it is fondly known started life as a one-off event in 2003 when some long term friends and staff from the Badaguish Centre in Aviemore decided to 'get on their bikes' and raise funds for a long sought after trampoline for the centre which provides activity holidays for children with special needs. The first event was such a success that those taking part agreed that it should be an annual event and hence ‘Bouncy Bike’ was born.

Raising funds for the trampoline (hence the name Bouncy Bike) was the reason for staging the first event and the subsequent next 4 BBC’s were also all in aid of the Badaguish Centre. In total, the first 5 BBCs have raised over £20,000 for the centre and enabled them to buy the trampoline and associated equipment, an outside spider net climbing frame, a wheelchair bike, a specially adapted go kart, large soft play mats and space hoppers and a number of other items too.

The original idea came from Paul and Morag Corrigan - at the time Paul was the centre’ s fundraising events organiser – and together with some incredible long term friends and some centre colleagues the event went from strength to strength (as has their thigh muscles!). When Paul moved on from the centre in 2007 it looked like BBC5 would be the final event however … the core group of friends decided that the BBC event was just far too much fun and such a real sense of purpose to come to an end and so the Bouncy Bike legend goes on! Future BBCs will be raising funds for different charities or worthy causes so if you see the Bouncy Bike team in your area – please feel free to throw some money or buns at them!

Each year the event route and details are kept a closely guarded secret by Paul (apart from a series of witty cryptic clues sent to participants) and then the location is ‘announced’ at the Christmas social gathering. Bouncy Bike is always held over the last weekend of May and the event objectives remain the same: to raise funds for deserving charities or causes by completing a sponsored two day bike challenge in Scotland and to ‘enjoy’ the challenge, camaraderie, exercise and stunning scenery in different parts of Scotland as we all age and weather gracefully!

The folk who make up the BBC team come in all shapes and sizes and ages and smells and each one gives up their time, holidays, efforts, enthusiasm, sweat (and occasionally blood and tears as well) to take part and raise funds. “They are the most amazing, incredible and motivational bunch of bouncers it has been my privilege to get covered in oil with” - Paul Corrigan.
